Complete Guide : How to fix driver problem

Recently I saw some of my friends facing some issue regarding drivers. So I thought to write a post about computer's driver symptoms, problems and their solution.

Check : How to type with your mouse

When we buy a computer, inside the box we get a cd, alot of people think its a tutorial cd or some information about their system stored in that cd and they don't give value to it, even some people misplace it. But do you know, that is the driver cd, without it your computer is almost useless. So keep it safely!!

Tip : If you lost your driver cd, don't loose hope continue reading.

Symptoms & Problems :

If you have connected a device to your computer and it could'nt detect it, can be a symptom of driver issue.

These are the symptoms of driver problem :

  • Windows will show "Device Not Installed Properly"
  • Windows asks for driver, and fail to find it
  • After connecting a device you hear the beep but it does'nt work
  • Device not working properly

Check : Create partition without formatting

Solutions :

Here is a complete guide to troubleshoot your driver issue :

There is no fixed steps to fix your driver issue. You have to use different methods to fix your driver problem.

First thing is to check device manager, right click on my computer - properties and locate device manager ( in hardware tab if your are using xp or in left side for windows 7). Any device showing a yellow exclamation mark on its icon means its having a driver issue.

Tip : Before fixing any driver problem, device manager is the tool to look for.

Now right click on the icon showing yellow exclamation mark and update driver, and windows will automatically search for it. This step always does'nt work, so lets move to next method.

You can download the drivers from your manufacturer's website from support section. These driver are of highest quality and updated. If you have a pre-build computer simply goto your manufacturer's website like dell.com. If you have a home build computer you can goto your motherboard manufacturer's website and then select the operating system and the model no. of your motherboard.

Check : How to plan before buying a computer

DriverPack Solution is another good option if you don't know the model number. Its a program which have a massive collection of drivers for all types of devices and operating system. It is a 3GB program but have almost every driver you need. They are not the best quality driver compared to the manufacturer's driver but definitely a good alternative.

If you find any other good program like DriverPack solution write it in the comment box.

Plan before buying your next computer

Planning is a very important stage before doing anything. We plan before a trip, before going for a picnic, before shopping and many more. With a proper planning things can be done effectively and efficiently.

But when its comes to buying a computer, lot of us skip this process. Most people buy computer by what they see. This actually means if you see your neighbour have a computer which works good and he/she gave you a good review you buy it or you saw a latest model in an advertisement and decided to get it.

But if you think and do a little planning you'll realise you can actually save alot of money buying a computer.

Plan before you buy :

1) What you need?
2) Why you need?
3) Future possibilities.
4) Budget

What you need?

First you have to decide what you need? Do you need a laptop or a desktop. We know desktops are cheaper than laptops. But it takes alot of space in your home and you cannot take it out with you. While laptops are a bit costly but its have several advantages, you can take it anywhere you go, also you don't need any seperate space to keep it. So if you think you don't need it outside you can simply buy a desktop. Or if you have a job where a computer is needed anytime anywhere you should go for a laptop. Many people don't realise there needs and buy desktop when they need a laptop for working outside or buys a laptop and use it in home. So if your need is clear you can save paying extra bucks.

Why you need?

The next thing you should think about why you need? This means for what purpose you need a desktop or laptop and according to your need you can plan the configuration of your system. By planning what configuration you want, here also you can save alot of bucks as well. I saw people having a high end system with all latest things inside their system but for the purpose they use it they don't need that configuration. So let me help you in planning your configuration.
So if your are a gamer and you want to play latest games on your laptop or desktop (desktop recommended) you need a good processor atleast i3 or i7. You also need good amout of storage which means you need atleast 1tb or 2tb hard disk. Then you need 4gb or 8 gb ddr3 ram. Graphics card for sure. A good and a big LED monitor for good gaming experience, speakers and headphones aswell. A good keyboard is also important here. These are the basic configuration for gamers for playing latest games.

If you are planning to buy a computer to use some basic functions like Ms office, basic internet you don't need a high end configuration. To use this basic features you can simply buy a basic configured pc. You don't need processors like i3 or i7, even dual core or core 2 duo will work for you. As here you also don't need too much storage, so 500gb is enough if you have doubt you can get a 1 tb hard disk aswell. As you don't need much storage you can lower the ram to 2gb or 4gb. Here you don't have to buy graphics card too. Monitor is depending on what you want but a LCD monitor is good enough.

Future possibilities

This is a very tactical part in our planning for buying a computer. All the above planning we discussed is all about present. But we should always keep the future possibilities in the back of our head. Let me clear this for you with an example.

Suppose you started a small business at home. So according to the above planning you don't need a high configured system and you can also save money by buying a desktop. But what if you business started to grow and then you need to attend to your online customers even outside your home. This is where planning about future possibilities comes in. Then you might realise you should have bought a laptop or now there is no option without buying a new laptop. This can make you spend more in trying to save money. So we should always think about the future possibilities when we are planning to buy a new pc.

Tip : Nowadays smartphones can do almost everything like desktop or laptop. So if you think you can handle you work with a smartphone may be you don't need a laptop and stick with desktop.

Budget

Budget is the most important thing in every planning. So after you planned on the basis of all the above topic you can guess the budget of your computer you planned. So now you have to think is that number in your budget or not. If not, then you have compromise a little with your plan. May be you should lower your configuration a little to make it in your budget.

Budget tips :

If you think a desktop can even do for you, you can buy a desktop other than laptop.
If you think 1 tb hard disk is enough, lower it
You can also lower few inches of your monitor size aswell.
If you are not in a hurry, watch out for online sales.

Hope this article gave you an idea about how to plan before buying a laptop or desktop.

1) Screwdriver set
2) Digital multimeter
3) Brush

Note : Power onn the computer

Step 1

Now the first thing you should check if the monitor's power LED is onn or off. If You see the LED is onn then your monitor is getting power. If the power LED is off try another power cord to check, is it your monitor's power cord needed to be change or if it still does'nt work with a new power cord then its time to change the monitor.

Tip : Check the plugin board from where the computer is getting power, may be the problem is in the switchboard and not in the computer

So If your monitor is getting power and there is still no display lets move to step 2

Check : How to create a new drive without formatting

Step 2

So now the next thing we'll check is the VGA of the computer.Carefully remove the VGA cord from the monitor, if now you can see its displaying (No signal) or some words dancing on the screen then its seems to be the monitor's VGA is fine.

Tip : Check with a new VGA cord to make sure the old VGA cord is working or not.

Now, that you know the monitor is not responsible for the problem, we can move a step ahead

Note : Cut power off from the computer

Now use the screwdriver to open the desktop cabinet cover with the motherboard facing upwards, so you can see all the components inside the cabinet.

Tip: Use the brush to clean the dust inside the cabinet

Step 3

Now carefully take the RAM out from the slot, rub gently the chip of the RAM with an eraser (the one we use to erase pencil marks). Now power onn the computer and check if the display is back or not (most of the time display problem occurs due to rust on the RAM chip).if there is still no display on the monitor, use the multimeter to check the voltage of RAM, if not use another SMPS.

Tip : If there is still no voltage in the RAM slot even after trying with a new SMPS, the problem can be in the RAM slot.

There is another possibility, that if the system has been upgraded recently, may be you need more powerful Ram.

By following this guide you can troubleshoot your own computer and skip paying to a technician and also you can save alot of time, even you can earn some extra cash by helping people troubleshooting their computer problem.

Online game can help to score better in school

A recent study has found that playing online video games can sharpen maths, science and reading skills in teenager than who spend hours on Facebook or other social media sites. Students who play online video games regularly, scores 15 points above the average in maths and 17 points above the average in science.

"When you play online games you're solving puzzles to move to the next level and that involves using some of the general knowledge and skills in maths, reading and science that you've been taught during the day," said Alberto Posso, Associate Professor at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia.

Researchers found, teenagers who are engadged in social media sites on a regular basis are more likely to fall in school results. They score 20 points worse in maths than students who don't use social media.

"It's possible that children who are already gifted in the areas of math, science, and reading are also more likely to play online games and children with lower academic abilities spend more time socializing. Gameplay appears to equip students to apply and sharpen knowledge learned in school by requiring them to solve a series of puzzles before moving to the next game level," Posso said.

For the study, published in the International Journal of Communication, the team tested more than 12,000 Australian 15-year-olds in maths, reading and science, as well as collecting data on the students' online activities.

Test ram slot voltage with digital multimeter

To check any component's voltage on computer motherboard using digital multimeter, first you need to know some informations about how to use a multimeter. We are talking about computers so I'll guide you about that because with a multimeter you can check many other devices aswell.

Warning : If any kid reading this, please don't try this at home.

Connect the black wire of the multimeter in the port marked as com on the multimeter and insert the other red wire just above the Com port. Multimeter has a digital screen and a regulator. Around the regulator there are few sections, each for measuring different things like AC current, DC current, resistance etc., because we are talking about computers here, we'll focus on DC current section.

DC current section marked as 200m, 2000m, 20, 200, 1000 volt. Computer only takes -12 to + 12 volt so we'll set the regulator pointer on 20 to measure exact voltage.

Warning : Don't set the regulator below 20, it can damage the motherboard or the multimeter.

Note : To chech RAM slot we need to know some informations about SMPS

Tip : Cut the power off from the computer

SMPS have a 24 pin ATX power connector and other connectors to power other peripherals like hard disk and CD/DVD Rom. Remove the connecters from the CD/DVD rom and also from hard disk, but don't remove the 24 pin ATX connector from the motherboard, because we need to give power in motherboard.

Tip : Don't have to take the SMPS out from the cabinet, just remove those connectors.

Smps carry -12 to +12 volt, each colour of wire carry a volt within that, and the black wire carries 0 volt (ground)

Now insert the black lead of your multimeter in the pata (IDE) power connector port which is connected to a black wire. Now power onn the Smps and use the red lead of your multimeter to check the ram slot. (locate the pins of ram slot on the back side of the motherboard. Usually you will get voltage around 3.5v / 5v and from some pins 0 volt).

Warning : Don't try to measure any other component with this setup
